Gloria's Glorious Garden – High Summer
Alison Owens
Mandy is following Gloria's advice and will be sowing these cut and come again lettuce this week.
Fruit & Vegetables
• Keep picking ‘cut and come’ again salads and make sure you sow new seeds every few weeks.
• Lettuce likes a constant temperature so try to sow in an area where temperature swings are minimal for example under the greenhouse stage or on a cool shelf in the house.
• Sow pea shoots, they are great for salads and you can harvest them in three weeks.
• There is still time for beetroot and quick growing vegetables like pak choi.
• Pick, pick, pick! You have nurtured your soft fruit so don’t forget them.

Top tips for surviving high summer
• Stake out sun flowers.
• Start pruning some perennial shrubs.
• This is a good time to take semi ripe or hard wood cuttings from shrubs and also the pelargoniums.
• Keep your roses watered. A bucket each day during the dry season
• Like the roses, don’t forget to water any new plants you have put in. A bucket full is far more beneficial than a light sprinkling.
• If you still have bedding plants to go in, cut them back to a nodule or two leaves before planting out so hopefully they will manage to get going despite the dry weather. This helps to stress them less and will get the roots going.
