Gloria's Glorious Garden – Autumn & Apples
Alison Owens
Autumn is another busy time in the garden, harvesting the last of the vegetables and having a good clear up and sort out.
Continue to dead head and collect seeds.
Those dahlias will go on till the frosts arrive, keep watering and feeding so you can continue to
enjoy that late autumn colour. If you are lucky enough to have an apple tree do not pick the fruits until they are ready. Unripe fruit will not store well. Pick the large ripe Bramleys to keep, not the smaller ones.
Store your apples in a cool shed or garage and wrap each fruit in paper, lay them out in single layers in cardboard boxes. Do make sure you have plenty of ventilation and inspect your fruit regularly as rotten fruit will spread to the others .
Pears can also be picked and stored but do not last as long as apples.
Now is also the time to find some lovely recipes for apple cakes and pies or chutneys and
jellies all ready for enjoy in the winter months
