Mandy's Hanging Basket Tips
Alison Owens
I just love a hanging basket and always have them in the garden, all over the place. Here are my top tips for creating exciting and original baskets and keeping them alive!
Don’t just think about planting with flowers but fruit and vegetables too. Fill one with strawberries, one with mini tomatoes or even one with chillies. I even been known to mix vegetables with flowers – anything goes if it grows! This year I am going to experiment with succulents.
I line my baskets with black plastic bags and hessian but if I can forage moss I use that too, but before you put too much effort in it is worth noting when the plants grow they cover the basket so the plastic won’t show.
Drying out is always a problem so do mix water
granules with your compost and I also pop an old saucer in the bottom of the basket to catch and save the water.I plant lots of cuttings of my house plants
into my baskets, once the frosts are passed, Swedish Ivy, Spider plants and tradescantia.
We often forget that greenery is an important part of a baskets look.
