Mandy's March Garden

Alison Owens

ooh, I love a bargain!

ooh, I love a bargain!

As you may know now my dear friend Gloria has an amazing Georgian house and gardens and with very little help manages acres by herself . She is full of knowledge and love for her plants and its her tips that I pass on to you.  She has an amazing orchard with 26 varieties of English apples , she cuts a meandering path through the orchard and plants snowdrops each side. Each year she lifts and divides the snow drops to extend her path. It’s a beautiful sight after a dreary January and February.  I don't have an orchard or that path but I did spy snowdrops in the garden centre and they were reduced, just love a bargain! I have divided the bulbs up and planted them along the edge of one  of my raised beds.  Can’t wait to see what occurs next year!

March is the month to be buying seeds, when I asked Gloria what we should all be doing she said to plant veg in pots and containers, it such fun, you don’t need much space – windowsills, balconies, front gardens, door steps or porches – and they will all benefit from a pot of vegetables. Carrots , garlic, cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, peas, potatoes,  try anything, involve children as they just love growing things.  I think there is nothing like picking your own veg.  As for the containers be imaginative here too. Use tins, pots, old saucepans, wooden crates, old wicker baskets and even old shopping bags which are ideal to pop a few potatoes in.  A lot more recycling can be done in our gardens . I am also on a roll with my seeds.  Oh and by the way, my sweet peas are all up, if a bit leggy, just pinch out the tips Gloria says!!
