Gloria's Glorious Garden – Sweet Peas
Alison Owens
Sweet peas, Sweet peas, Sweet peas, my desert island flower!
There is nothing like picking a bunch of your own sweet peas, the smell is divine. You can grow them anywhere, even on a balcony, and perfect to do with children.
The hardy gardeners amongst you will have sowed your seeds in autumn, this will give you stronger plants and more bountiful flowers, but its never too late, sow a pack of seeds now on your windowsill, I found my seeds half price in the garden centre!
Use a recycled plastic milk bottle, cut the top off and make a few holes in the bottom, soak the seeds overnight before you sow them. You can get your little helpers to decorate the milk bottle or write their names on them. I also use the paper pulp trays my veggies come in as seed trays as well, i never buy plastic seed pots i reuse or recycle.
Once the plants have several leaves on them, pinch out the tips to encourage side shoots.
Plant them out in a large plastic tub popped into a nice old galvanised bucket into the garden border, once frosts are over, pop a few sticks in the pot. The sweet peas will grow up through your other plants. Last year mine grew up through my rose bush. Roses and sweet peas, English country garden heaven.
